The sugar maple, transplanted to metro D.C., is one of the first and most spectacular fall-color trees around here. Apparently its sugar content promotes red hues, while its other vivid chlorophyllic and carotenoid pigments can change rapidly from sunlight intensity, with sap pH and due to the subtraction of these colors, notably over the autumnal season.
The eastern hemlock tree is nonpoisonous, versus its namesake, the hemlock plant of which Socrates drank. An evergreen, it could survive over 1000 years — however, the existence of its groves is being threatened by a non-native pest.
