roshambo Rock-Paper-Scissors no relation to Comte de Rochambeau

I was wondering if roshambo – rock-paper-scissors or stein-papier-scherer had anything to do with Count Rochambeau, who happened to be a commander of French troops passing through Rhode Island circa 1781.

I was wondering if the word roshambo, the name i learned in Berlin, Germany for rock/paper/scissors, had anything to do with Count Roshambeau

There is no connection/

At least the writer of this article establishes that there’s no connection to count Rochambeau or his activities. There’s some good history of the origins of the roshambo game however.

I knew of ‘roshambo’ as rock, paper, scissors while living in Berlin, Germany early to mid 2000s. There’s even an electronic version of the game hanging under the owning s of the Oberbaumbrücke – over trees bridge.

I thought of this after recently seeing a stone monument about the French Comte de Rochambeau’s presence with troops in Providence, Rhode Island, in the New England states, northeast USA. “Count Rochambeau was in 1780, appointed commander of land forces as part of the project code named Expédition Particulière. He landed at Newport, Rhode Island on 10 July but was held there inactive for a year due to his reluctance to abandon the French fleet blockaded by the British in Narragansett Bay. The College in the Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations (now known as Brown University) served as an encampment site for some of Rochambeau’s troops.”

Just thought I’d check it out.

One Response to roshambo Rock-Paper-Scissors no relation to Comte de Rochambeau

  1. Loren Booda says:

I would like to understand the statistical history of roshambo — whether its outcomes are random.

Humans may have a psychological or physical leaning toward selecting one of the three, or for choosing a pattern involving multiple choices.

Maybe the preference differs among languages, cultures, or reasons for using the system.
